The Bath and Aberystwyth round up is finally here. The quirks and happenings of leg 3 have long since faded from the memories of both me and its competitors, but the scoreline remains. The tale it tells, is of Bath beginning to exert a stranglehold over the standings. Though only taking home one individual gold this leg, courtesy of recurve novice Chloe Shepherd, Bath’s consistency across its team will be hard to match over the rest of the season.
There were some standout individual performances. Both Exeter’s Luke Burch and Plymouth’s Joe Maskell have gone three for three this season in recurve open and barebow open respectively. With an impressive 551 at his old university of Bath, Joe is regaining peak form at the right time, with BUCS just around the corner. Another archer in searing form was Cardiff’s Samantha Roberts. A 565 put her well clear of the field in the split leg women’s recurve category, as well as being the highest recurve score across both recurve categories at the Aberystwyth leg. Cardiff’s Oli Coupe came as close to a record as possible without beating is, as he matched the existing SWWU compound record of 588 points, narrowly falling short of the score he needed in the second half of the Portsmouth.
SWWU heads to Plymouth on the 25th, which for many of you will be your last chance to log a score for BUCS qualifiers. The question is, can anyone stop Bath from running away with the league?
